HAMMAD HUDA - BMES President
Junior Biomedical Engineering Student, UF
I am very passionate about biomedical engineering, and I am very committed to leadership, service, and learning from others. The BME faculty, my peers, and the rest of the BMES E-board have all inspired me to not simply be satisfied with mediocrity but go beyond my limits in challenging myself. My aspiration is to become a leader that inspires the courage to take risks, as well as, the determination to make our goals a reality. I've realized that something like perfection doesn’t exist but by comparing yourself with those around you, such as the BME professors and students, you can at least in a good direction.
Currently, I do research in Dr. Schmidt’s Biomimetic Materials & Neural Engineering Lab for developing a novel biomaterial that mitigates discogenic back pain, in addition to, researching a way to regenerate the intervertebral disc. As a result, I have really grown to appreciate regenerative medicine, especially with respect to the nervous system. Additionally, I am interested in research on neurodegenerative diseases and how we can develop better therapies or treatments.

ANNA GAMS
Vice President of Industry and Corporate Affairs My name is Anna Gams. I come from a cold country called Estonia. Currently I'm a junior majoring in BME-materials track. I enjoy reading classic Russian literature, playing team sports, photography, and traveling. In the future, I see myself in a lab doing research on tissues... But for now, I'm interested in exposing students to science and research. This is why I really enjoy organizing professional events. P.S. 'Tere' means hello in Estonian. Email: [email protected] |

BICH NGOC L.
Vice President of Marketing and Advertisement
Hello everyone! I am a senior in Biomedical Engineering on the neural track, and I plan on graduating with a Masters in BME. I love to read (classical literature, textbooks, manga, webtoons) and draw, and I have to admit that I am quite a fan of studying. My ultimate goal is to work in a neuroscience-related industry position (primarily research and development) where I can improve certain neurological diseases such as Alzhiemer's Disease (AD). Currently for my research, I am analyzing AD EEG data as well as epilepsy patient ECoG data; I am also very interested in cognitive reserve! (By the way, my name is pronounced "bic-noc.")

MADISON GRECO
Vice President of External Affairs HI all! My name is Madison, and I am junior in the Biomedical Engineering Program, completing the Neural Engineering track. After completing my undergraduate degree I plan on continuing onto medical school, where I can first hand see the applications of all I have learned in BME to help real world patients. As much as I enjoy the research and industry side of Biomedical Engineering, it is the patients that the devices and technology we are creating to benefit that interest me the most--they are the ones whose quality of life will directly be impacted (and hopefully improved!) by the research that we do. To add a few more things about me, I love to run, cook, read, paint, hang out with my dog, and am always down for adventures and learning new things. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, I would love to help! :) Email: [email protected] |
JONATHAN LE
Vice President of Internal Affairs Hi! I am a junior in Biomedical Engineering on the Biomaterials track. I plan on going to medical school or possibly getting a graduate degree in Biomedical Engineering. I do a lot of fun things such as wake boarding and playing sports like basketball or ultimate frisbee. My dream goal is to go to medical school and work with the army to become a trauma surgeon and apply what I know about tissue engineering in the field (coming up with novel ideas to fix and minimize scar tissue). I am also interested in pediatrics because I love kids and Dance Marathon is another organization that I love to participate in. Email: [email protected] |
ALEXANDER KAO
Vice President of Professional Development Hey Guys! My name is Alexander Kao (said like the animal), but you can just call me Alex. Here at the University of Florida, besides being the Vice-President of Professional Development for UF-BMES, I am also involved in other organizations such as: MEDLife, Student Activities Involvement and Leadership Experience (SAILE), and Gatorship. In general, I am a hardworking and driven individual who hopes to change the world through medical innovation. In the long term, I hope to partake in an MD/PhD program dealing with Cardiology and Biomedical Engineering. Beyond my passions of science, I am well versed in mechanical design, specifically through Solidworks and Mastercam where I hold associate certifications in both programs. In the past, I have conducted research in the sub-field of neural engineering, specifically dealing with the visual pathway. Later, this research was presented in tandem with myself and co-published at the 29th Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference. Additionally, I have attended the 2014 Annual Biomedical Engineering Society Meeting. In my spare time, I love to participate in both basketball and Ultimate Frisbee. Furthermore, I am an avid gamer on both PC (Some include Team Fortress 2 and Hearthstone) and Nintendo (some include Monster Hunter and Super Smash) system related games. Lastly, I’ve also developed a hobby of filmmaking/cinematography on just about any topic. Overall, I hope to give back to others, the same way I’ve been treated by expanding UF-BMES. ANTHONY POWERS
Treasurer Hello everyone. I am currently a junior in the biomaterials track of Biomedical Engineering. I am working on my Bachelor's now but intend to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering afterward, where I intend to work in bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. My current research involves testing methods of drug delivery and effects of ATRA in order to promote elastin and collagen expression in aortal smooth muscle cells with the goal of applying this to cardiac stents and balloons. My hobbies include archery, video games, and programming of most all types. Email: [email protected] |
ARUN K.
Secretary Hi, my name is Arun and I’m a second year electrical engineering major from Tampa, Florida. I want to study neural engineering in grad school and eventually move on to music therapy research. Also, I love playing piano and I’m pursuing a jazz minor here at UF. Email: [email protected] |
NOA GROOMS
Historian
I am currently a sophomore in the Pre-Biomedical Engineering major and would like to obtain a minor in mathematics. I would like to enter the neural engineering track if I am accepted into the BME program. I enjoy collecting classic rock from the '60s and '70s on vinyl. Also in my spare time, I love playing soccer and working out. My aspiration for the future is to ultimately work for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in researching neurological diseases. Currently, I am a research assistant within a lab at Shand's Hospital where I help with work on liver cancer.
